Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan's biography:
Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (1890-1988) was an influential Pashtun political and spiritual leader and a close ally of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. He was also known as Badshah Khan, or "King of Chiefs".
Khan was born in the Utmanzai village of the North West Frontier Province in British India (now in Pakistan). He was the youngest of four brothers, who all grew up to become leaders in their own right. He was educated at home and, like his brothers, became deeply involved in their father's involvement in politics.
Khan was deeply influenced by Gandhi's non-violent philosophy and, inspired by his own Pashtun heritage, he championed the cause of Indian independence from British rule. He founded the Khudai Khidmatgar (Servants of God) movement in 1929, which sought to empower and unify the Pashtun people. Khan and his followers actively opposed British rule, and were often met with repression and violence.
Khan was arrested and jailed numerous times during the Indian independence struggle. He was even awarded the highest civilian award in India, the Bharat Ratna, for his non-violent service to the nation.
Khan was a firm believer in gender equality and was a vocal champion of women's rights. He was also one of the first advocates of inter-religious harmony in India. Khan believed that religious differences should not divide people, and that all people should be treated equally.
Khan died in 1988 at the age of 98, but his legacy continues to inspire people around the world. He is remembered for his commitment to non-violence, his tireless advocacy of human rights, and his unwavering belief in the power of peace and understanding.
